Okay, is there really a difference between sugaring and waxing?

It turns out there is actually a HUGE difference between the two...

A picture of someone getting sugaring vs. waxing.

SUGAR INGREDIENTS ARE CLEANER THEN WAX AND MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

For starters, sugar and wax have an entirely different ingredient decks. Alexandria Profesional wax is made up of 3 simple ingredients: sugar, lemon, and water. Seriously, I make people eat it so they can taste how delicious and clean it is. Trying to find a clean wax is still a challenge, since most of them contain petroleum based resins and chemicals. Wax can also be prone to contamination or cross contamination if your esthetician is double dipping (which I NEVER do), so if you are still waxing be SURE the esthetician is not double dipping her sticks!

Speaking of sticks, with sugaring we don't use any stick or strips. It is all sugar paste and gloves. The esthetic and spa industry can be a big environmental offender. The fact that sugaring minimizes my waste makes me feel better knowing that I am being the greenest esthetician I can be.

SUGAR IS MORE GENTLE ON THE SKIN

Secondly, sugar is much more gentle on the skin then wax is. For instance, sugar doesn't adhere to the live skin cells, which causes less discomfort on the skin when removed and exfoliates dry dead skin. Leaving your skin silky smooth and perfectly prepped for an organic spray tan (which I also offer). Since wax is made of resins and adhere to anything it is applied to, it will cause more discomfort when removed from the skin (seriously, sugaring hurts at least half as bad as waxing). Not to mention the risk of lifting (pulling off) live skin cells, leaving you with superficial scabs or worse pigmentation problems. Again, this happens to even the best esthetician out there.

Additionally, sugar is water soluble and can be easily rinsed away if needed.

NO RISK OF BURNING SENSITIVE SKIN

Since wax is a heated product, there is always a danger of burning sensitive skin. This can happen to even the most seasoned esthetician; there is no way to avoid this risk with wax. Sugaring is a paste product and used at body temperature. Sugar paste only adheres to the hair, not the skin, and lubricates the root for easier extraction from the follicle.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO LET YOUR HAIR GROW AS LONG

This is what makes sugaring so different for me, the esthetician. Instead of applying the wax with the growth direction and pulling against it, we actually do the exact opposite for sugaring. This means two things:

1. It will cause less breakage of the hair, which leave you smoother for longer.

2. You can get sugared more frequently if desired. One of the biggest issues I hear from clients about waxing is, "I hate growing my hair out and being so hairy!" With sugaring, you can come in with just 2 weeks of hair growth. If you stick to the two week sugaring schedule, then you will be rewarded with permanent hair removal even faster waxing or being on a monthly sugaring schedule.
